I know I have about 30 days once the insulin is out of the fridge, but I am wondering, how long does insulin last in the fridge? Does anyone keep their insulin in use for more than 30 days. I hate throwing away a vial of novolin R or a pen of lantus (whatever you are using) that is Not empty because it's 30 days.
I have not kept using after the expiration from the open date. Just wanting information. Insulin used past 28 days at room temperature or past the expiration date on the box may still be good. However, using it may cause control problems and is not recommended.
does insulin expire, Lantus, Humalog and Novolog seem to spoil faster than Regular and NPH. If you can't afford to buy insulin and insurance does not cover it, you may be able to get it free. I am on a pump so I can't provide any personal experience with the 28 days after opening; however, I have a strong suspicion that manufacturers of meds always tighten up on experation dates just in case there is a bad batch which might expire early. I use pens for my Symlin and use them up to ten or more times or until it becomes more difficult to penetrate the skin. What happens to insulin past its expiration date?

With insulin left in a reservior, just leave on the old line, insert a new canula, attach, fixed prime, and go. In Rascal's circumstance of a kinked canula, doing this is the least disposal of perfectly good insulin. However, I have enough things to remember so I personally would prefer to just change infusion set and reservior all at one time.
