allston stubbs, The neighborhood of Allston, located in northwest Boston, was annexed by the City in 1874. Once home to stockyards and rail yards, today's Allston is a bustling residential and commercial mix. Allston takes its name from the 18th-century American painter-poet Washington Allston, who lived in Cambridge and famously painted the area in the landscape Fields West of Boston. The neighborhood developed around a major railroad yard and nearby stockyards. The chosen name, Allston, was selected to honor painter Washington Allston, who lived across the river in Cambridge and was said to have been inspired by the area’s rural landscape along the Charles. The name Allston referred to a postal area and the station, however.
In 1868, a new post office and train station on the eastern side of Brighton were given the name “Allston,” after the painter Washington Allston. Some accounts suggest has it that the neighborhood was named specifically for his painting, “The Fields West of Boston.”
